A well-rusted horizontal dial of iron or steel about 10 inches diameter on a stone and masonry pedestal. Dial face shows Arabic hour numerals but hour line angles may be wrong. Mounted atop a stone and masonry pedestal.
 
 
Brunswick Maine USA Vertical Dial Dial 53
A set of three declining vertical dials each approximately 3x4 foot of carved Indiana Limestone set into the east, south and west facades of Hubbard Hall. Dial faces include hour lines and Arabic hour numerals. Each bronze gnomon rod is additionally supported at its end. The dials are not corrected for longitude and there is no EOT correction provided. With corrections, all three dials tell accurate time. The building south wall declines approximately 18? west of south.
 
 
Brunswick Maine USA Horizontal Dial Dial 830
In the shade of many trees is a 12 inch circular horizontal sundial sitting on a square granite plinth. The dial plate shows solar time with Roman numerals V to VII (5am to 7pm). Half and quarter hours are shown with dots.
 
 
Buffalo Valley Tennessee USA Horizontal Dial Dial 1013
This monumental size sundial is called "Marking Time: and spreads over an area 100 x 50 feet (30 x 15 m). The gnomon is a 12 foot (3.6 m) tall welded stainless steel structure. The last several feet of the gnomon is a thin metal bar ending in a sharp point. Multiple time markers are arranged in hour lines from 6am to 6pm. These marks have the names of all 95 Tennessee counties and the noon line has only one county, Davidson, in tribute to the state capital in Nashville, Davidson Co. The large concrete base of the gnomon has fossil type imprints on the surface.
 
 
Bullhead City Arizona USA Horizontal Dial Dial 458
This horizontal dial is an engraved flagstone approximately 42 inches in diameter designed by John Carmichael. The monofilar gnomon is a stranded brass cable that extends upward to a height of 18 inches and is held taught by a rock counterweight. Hour lines and direction of sunrise and sunset for the equinoxes and solstices are given. Also has noon Mark, The Equation of time, and a 32-point Compass Rosette

A simple steel armillary dial ten feet high overall on a 5x5 foot granite base. The dial is located in front of a building named in honor of William Bunton, a prominent local businessman who died in 1881.
 
 
Burlington Vermont USA Analemmatic Dial Dial 692
This Circles of Peace dial is a combination calendrical and analemmatic design consisting of fourteen 5 to 10 foot high granite stones in a 43 foot diameter circle oriented to align with sunset on the solstices, equinoxes and cross-quarter days. An inner sixteen foot major diameter analemmatic dial includes 12 hour marker stones and a central stone that also shows the directions of sunset on the corresponding major dates. The calendar stone calculations and survey placement was done by NASS member Bill Gottesman.

An approximately 30-inch diameter equatorial dial of painted steel with a sandblasted stainless steel dial plate. Dial face has two hour circles showing EST and EDST with Arabic numerals. Longitude correction is not included and there is no EOT information provided.
 
 
Burlington Vermont USA Reflective Equatorial Dial 694
A 40 inch tall, helical, lens focusing projection equatorial dial of bronze and glass. A sliding time scale adjusts for longitude, DST and EOT. Cylindrical focusing mirrors project a sharply focused band of light on the inside of the helical time scale. This is a Precision Sundials Renaissance sundial.
 
 
Burlington Vermont USA Equatorial Dial Dial 719
A 6-1/2 foot tall, 4 foot diameter helical cylinder equatorial dial of self-weathering COR-TEN steel plate. The 2 foot long beveled edges of the two ends of the helix serve as gnomons, casting shadows for standard time and daylight saving time onto the interior surface. Time is indicated by the dominant shadow, top in summer and bottom in winter. Hour marks are shallow bored holes in the interior surface; no numerals are present but the noon mark is indicated by two small adjacent holes. The helical curved edges allow shadows to fall on the interior surface throughout the year as solar declination varies. An adjacent bronze plaque describes the dial and gives an EOT and longitude correction graph. Dial is supported by a curved COR-TEN steel plate allowing some springy motion.
 
 
Burnaby British Columbia Canada Horizontal Dial Dial 689
A simple horizontal dial with a pipe gnomon in a gravel bed, about 6 feet in diameter. Flush stone hour markers have raised Roman numerals. Unfortunately, several of the hour markers are incorrectly positioned, and moss and weeds partially obscure much of the dial face. Because of the presence of trees all around it, the dial only receives the sun in the middle of the day, and hardly at all in the winter half of the year. A plaque nearby explains that dial was installed to celebrate the opening of Burnaby Lake Park in 1977.
 
 
Burnaby British Columbia Canada Equatorial Dial Dial 930
This substantial and durable 30 inch anodized aluminium equatorial dial is mounted on a concrete plinth with a brass plaque showing the Equation of Time and usage instructions. The gnomon consists of two parallel plates each with a figure-8 analemma cut out. When the figure-8 apertures are rotated toward the sun, the dial illumination is corrected for the equation of time by reading the correct edge of the analemma for the date. If it the gnomon is turned sideways to the sun, the gap between the plates form a slit that produces a narrow beam for reading solar time adjusted to the longitude of the Pacific time zone. The hour scale is marked out at 5 minute intervals. Hours are labeled for Standard Time and for Daylight Saving Time.
 
 
Burnsville North Carolina USA Vertical Dial Dial 676
The Quilt Block Sundial, an 8x8 foot painted wood nearly-south facing vertical dial with a steel gnomon rod. Dial face consists of a bold quilt block pattern and includes Arabic hour numerals for local solar time, EST and EDT. Hour lines are corrected for longitude and EOT correction is provided by the profile of purple hills along the bottom of the dial. The star map at the top of the dial represents the starry sky at the first sunrise over the newly formed Yancy County on December 29, 1833. The dial declines 3deg west of south. A 3 foot thick steel frame locates dial away from wall to clear roof overhang.
 
 
Calgary Alberta Canada Horizontal Dial Dial 661
A 9 inch diameter horizontal dial of Welsh green slate with brass gnomon. Hour lines show DST with longitude correction. Declination lines are shown for solstices and equinoxes. The gnomon includes a NASS logo. The dial sits atop a stone plinth with 12 inch diameter top. The original Sundial of Hope, sponsored by Child Find of Alberta, was placed in 1993 on an original plinth dating to before WW2. The simple dial installed in 1993 had been vandalized and the gnomon was missing. Roger Bailey designed and built this replacement dial to commemorate the 10th Anniversary of the founding of NASS. The new dial was unveiled during the 2003 NASS Conference Sundial Tour.
 
 
Calgary Alberta Canada Analemmatic Dial Dial 666
An analemmatic dial with 14.8 foot major axis of concrete, pebble and rock with cast concrete hour markers. Hour lines are longitude corrected and mark DST. A Zodiac date line of colored concrete is inlaid on the dial face. Seasonal markers for sunrise and sunset are included.

Calgary Alberta Canada Armillary Sphere Dial 953
This large armillary sphere stands about 2m tall and 1.5m wide. The dial is marked by roman numerals etched completely through the equatorial band. Large holes form the hour moment, with smaller holes for the half and quarter hours. The meridian ring also serves as support for the dial. In addition are the arctic and antarctic rings. The design of a slot mechanism allows the equatorial ring to be rotated by 15° for Daylight Saving Time. However there is no plaque for the Equation of Time correction to civil time.
 
 
Calgary Alberta Canada Equatorial Dial Dial 448
A steel and brass equatorial dial 49 inches in diameter. The dial simulates an armillary sphere with two crossed semi-circles in a modernistic sculpture. There is a slot in the gnomon that projects a sun line and corrects for the equation of time; the gnomon is turned over at the solstice. Fine adjustments are required near the solstice to show correct clock time (MST). Dial built as a Canadian Centennial Project. Now relocated to a mid-level landing on the entrance stairs but not correctly aligned, producing a 48 minute error.

Stone analemmatic dial designed by Kasian Kennedy. Dial is laid out in a circle. Monthly markers designate where observer is to stand to act as the gnomon. Both standard and saving time hour marks time from 5am to 8pm.

A school yard 6 by 4 meter analemmatic dial of pigmented concrete. The Sunclocks registered design has two hour ellipses, the outer one for standard time, the inner one for daylight saving time. The zodiac table is larger for the fall and winter periods so the design is really two sundials in one. Longitude correction is included. The plaque provides instructions in French and English and notes the dial marks the 50th anniversary of Ecole Banff Trail. The plaque instruction to stand on the current month is misleading; the user should straddle the dial centerline to avoid an offset error.

Cañon City Colorado USA Horizontal Dial Dial 1028
This sundial was constructed on the top of a 10-foot round, 75-ton column of reinforced concrete used to anchor aerial tram cables spanning 2200 feet across the Royal Gorge. Construction started in January 1969. The column is tilted away from the cables, so the dial face is inclined about 5 degrees toward the south. Hour lines are labeled with Roman numerals from V to VIII, with 15-minute marks between. The original gnomon -- two steel angles welded together -- was melted and twisted and the painted face of the dial severely damaged by a large wildfire in 2013, which destroyed most of the park. The tram has now been replaced with a gondola ride which doesn't use this anchor. The sundial was restore in 2015 but since has deteriorated.

A four foot diameter armillary dial built of 1.5 x 0.5 inch flat steel bar and 3/4 inch steel rod. A 1/2 inch steel rod gnomon casts the shadow on an aluminum equatorial ring, which includes hour and 5 minute marks. Dial includes horizon, equator, ecliptic, tropic, Arctic and Antarctic Circle rings.

A 10 inch diameter horizontal bronze dial with engraved nomenclature. Hour numerals 4 AM to 6 PM are Roman; ten minute numerals are Arabic and two minute marks are shown. Minute numerals are engraved in sequence 60, 20, 40, 60. Face engravings include EOT dates, "WATCH FASTER" and "WATCH SLOWER" and a central compass rose.
 
 
Carefree Arizona USA Horizontal Dial Dial 1
A 90 ft. diameter horizontal dial with a large reflecting pool beneath the gnomon designed by architect Joe Wong and solar engineer John Yellott. The dial is constructed using a steel frame and covered in anodized copper. The hour markers are 4 ft. diameter concrete circles. The dial is designed to show solar time corrected for the time zone offset. Thus the hour markers have been moved ahead of the solar time position. The hour lines are separated by alternating dark and light colored stones. The gnomon itself is 4 ft. wide, 72 ft. long and the tip is 35 ft. high. A pilot dial at a scale of 1/4 in. =1ft. is at the South end of the large dial. It is constructed of gold-anodized aluminum with time lines at 10 minute intervals. An equation of time plaque is nearby. The upper surface of the dial formerly served as a solar water heater to provide hot water to the city's first office building. Numerals face outward, so that they are more easily read by viewers.
 
 
Carlsbad California USA Vertical Dial Dial 734
A large vertical dial on an east-declining south stucco wall of an elevator tower in the parking lot of McClellan Airport. The gnomon, hour and declination lines and Arabic numerals are stainless steel. The dial design is flawed, incorrect for either a point-in-space nodus dial or a polar-inclined gnomon dial. The installed gnomon is horizontal but if intended to support only a nodus, the location is wrong; the nodus shadow is outside the lower declination line in the photos. The hour lines radiate from the gnomon base as for a polar-inclined gnomon; they should radiate from a point much higher if for a point-in-space nodus.
 
 
Carmel California USA Equatorial Dial Dial 179
A simple 12 inch diameter equatorial ring dial of rusted steel on a cast iron base bolted to a brick floor. This replacement dial has Arabic numerals and the base has Zodiacal symbols. The original "Sundial Lodge" was renovated as a boutique hotel but during the construction the original horizontal dial was lost. The original horizontal dial was about 16 in. diameter, made of bronze with a circular plate with Roman numerals on a plain concrete column and displayed the inscription, "Count none but the sunny hours."
 
 
Carnegie Pennsylvania USA Equatorial Dial Dial 911
Anthony Vitale, a life-long steel worker and internationally know metal sculptor, designed a dial for the place he once worked: Carnegie Steel. He started with a flat length of steel 72 inches long, selected the distance between hour lines to be 6 inches, delineated in 15 minute intervals. The result was an equatorial half-ring 45.836 inches in diameter. He added 3 1/4 inches buffer on each side of the equatorial, creating an outer ring 52 inches in diameter. Along the meridian half-ring, the sun's declination is marked with months when a nodus cross bar casts a horizontal shadow at solar noon. The concrete base can unfortunately be rotated and it seems to point to the magnetic north, but bringing a compass or modern cell phone near the steel armillary instantly creates a distortion.

Casper Wyoming USA Horizontal Dial Dial 367
The horizontal dial is a bronze circle 13.4 inches in diameter with raised lines and numbers and mounted on an iron plate on a pedestal of green stone. The angle of the gnomon is roughly 20 degrees, and the hour lines are designed for a latitude of about 22 deg, clearly not designed for Casper's latitude of 43 deg N. See "Sightings" in NASS Compendium Vol. 6 No. 4, Dec 1999. Pedestal is of the same green stone as the Planetarium building.

Chapel Hill North Carolina USA Horizontal Dial Dial 101
A 35 foot diameter horizontal dial of terrazzo with inset bronze hour lines and Roman hour numerals. The bronze gnomon edge is 24 feet long and at the tip stands 14 feet tall. In the base of the gnomon is a circular opening, holding a large inset bronze hour glass. In the terrazzo at the dial center is an inset bronze sun graphic with wavy spicules; this inset contains a US Coast and Geodetic Survey Triangulation Station marker. A plaque gives correction for EOT and longitude.
 
 
Charleston South Carolina USA Vertical Dial Dial 361
A 20 foot stone monument with a 2 foot diameter vertical recliner dial. See the NASS Compendium Vol.6 No. 1 Dec 1998. The platform in the base includes stones from the thirty-eight home states of those lost. Imbedded in the in the platform is a bronze arrow, pointing to the unmarked grave in the Atlantic.

Charlestown Massachusetts USA Horizontal Dial Dial 268
A 10 foot diameter bronze and granite horizontal dial with bronze gnomon and Arabic hour numerals on a 2 foot high granite base. Craftspeople of Colonial days are pictured on the face of the sundial. Sculptures depict a grandpa holding a baby while looking at the dial from the east side and a child peeking from behind the 5 foot tall bronze gnomon. Each bronze hour numeral includes a scene sculpture.
 
 
Chatham Village Pennsylvania USA Horizontal Dial Dial 907
This bronze dial is about 12 inches in diameter. The outside chapter ring is delineated in 15 minute intervals with hours shown in Roman numerals from 4am-8pm. The gnomon has the profile of a bird under the style. Unfortunately the photos show that the gnomon has been installed backward on the dial. At the south end of the sundial is the classic hour glass and wings, symbolizing "Time Flies".
 
 
Chattanooga Tennessee USA Obelisk or Vertical Gnomon Dial 670
An 18 foot diameter horizontal dial of concrete and pebble with a cast bronze figure of a boy with outstretched arm, the 8 foot high finger tip of which serves as a point-in-space gnomon. The dial face includes hour marks and declination lines. An open book plaque on the bronze statue base gives instructions.
