- Description:
- This horizontal bronze dial is approximately 12 inches (30cm) in diameter with a heavy green patina. The gnomon long ago was broken off. The inner chapter ring shows local solar time in half hour increments marked in Roman numerals from 6am to 6pm. The dial is decorated by an hour glass. The dial sets on a square 12x12 in (30x30cm) plinth. The pedestal is a column 4 in (10cm) in diameter and approximately 36in (91cm) tall with the top half fluted. Most interesting is that this dial, dedicated in 1930, was placed by Daughters of Union Veteran of the Civil War in memory of the Grand Army of the Republic (GAR). The dial's overall characteristic differs from those in Hamilton and Columbus OH and Springfield, IL (all of these dials were dedicated in the 1940's), but the sentiment of perpetuating the memory of Union Soldiers who fought in the civil war remains the same
- Inscription:
- On the Outer Chapter Ring: "To Perpetuate the memories of our fathers" On the Inner Chapter Ring: "G.A.R. - D. of U.V." On a separate near by plaque "To perpetuate the memories of our fathers" Placed by daughters of Union Veterans of the Civil War 1861-1865 Gail Roberts, Dept. Pat Instr. Frances M Bilyeu, Dept President 1930
