- San Bernardino Transit Center, 599 W. Rialto Ave., San Bernardino, CA 92401 hours: 9:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. weekdays. Dial is in the south west corner of the center at the end of the bus departure area.
- Description:
- This is a monumental horizontal sundial that from the ground simply looks like a giant pole with a slanting beam. High above the ground that beam is actually a segment of a gnomon, casting its shadow on the concrete plaza below. Then, if the eye is discerning, the concrete alternates in light gray and darker gray motif for the hour sections. From space (or Google Earth) the layout of the hour angles is clearly visible, radiating from a point considerably south of the gnomon pole, showing the hours from 9AM to 3PM local solar time. Hour line plaques extend from 10AM to 7PM.

- It was a collaborative effort, between April Cottini [Sr. Landscape Architect & Urban Designer at HDR] and Moshik Mah, [Sr. Architect & Deputy Executive Officer Transit Architecture at HDR]. Cottini authored the layout sheet included on the NASS site. The sundial was Mah's idea, and he drew up the initial concept for the gnomon, while the quotes and pavement detail was Cottini. They shared the math and it was a mathematical challenge.
