The oldest ring dial comes from Philippi, made sometime between 250 and 350 CE. But a true universal dial (that is, useable at any latitude) waited until 1534 for Gemma Frisius (a contemporary of astronomer Tycho Brahe) to create a 3-ring sundial. Frisius wrote about this dial in his best selling book on astronomical thinking, Cosmosgraphica.
The NASS sundial design has an outer meridian ring, an interior equatorial clock ring, and a zodiac bridge with a moveable pinhole that is set for the date. The dial tells local apparent solar time by rotating the dial until the pinhole of sunlight falls on the clock ring. The dial is unique in that it collapse for traveling. For display when the rings are unfolded, it comes with a stand.
It is shipped in a USPS Flat Rate Priority Box. At no additional cost your name and latitude will be embossed on the top of the dial. If the dial is a gift, let us know name and appropriate latitude.
