Description:
  • The 59" armillary is located in the Sundial Garden, designed by Landscape Designer Marian Coffin for Henry Francis DuPont for the family's former tennis court in 1955. It features an antique armillary sundial weighing 70 pounds. It was collected by the DuPont family between 1850-1920.

The dial is rather plane, with a simple arrow designed gnomon. The Arabic hour lines are etched into the equatorial dial and delineated with half and quarter hour marks. The dial sits on an ornate white marble pedestal.

The armillary sundial was damaged in a storm in 2004 and removed. The displayed dial is a replica of the original, now in storage at Winterthur Garden, Museum, and Library.
