Description:
  • A bronze horizontal sundial about 18 inches in diameter. The Arabic hour numbers range from 4am to 8pm, with time delineated into half, quarter, and eighth hours. A side photo of the gnomon shows it is set for about 53° and the top-down photo of the dial (corrected for perspective) confirms this. A DuPont purchase in England?

At the center of the dial is a large smiling sun with coronal flames, typical of 1920 artwork. To add a sense of antiquity the dial is inscribed "Anno Dom 1649". Don't believe it.

Most striking is the sundial base, consisting of three bronze cherubs blowing trumpets with one foot raised in the air, seeming to dance around the dial. The other foot rests on a while marble base.

The displayed dial is a replica of the original, now in storage at Winterthur Garden, Museum, and Library.
