Description:
  • Situated on a peninsula extending into Lake Drummund, this 25-foot (7.6m) double-ring analemmatic (human) sundial is easily seen on Google Earth. The mosaic dial shows both standard (6am-6pm) and daylight savings hours (7am-7pm).
The unusual location and available space inspired Schilling to create a sundial with a ginkgo leaf design, noting that ginkgo trees are one of the oldest living tree species and a symbol of hope and resilience in many Asian cultures. For those inspired to look even closer, virtually every artistic element holds meaning, from the colors chosen to represent the mosaic's compass points down to something as specific as the number of petals on the flowers depicted on design. In keeping with this, Schilling created a list of "activity ideas" for visitors, especially those accompanied by children (available electronically as a PDF or a free printout available through the park facilities office and gift shop).
